...happy four :)

nikah is a contract that transfers responsibilities. therefore know the man you’re thinking of marrying, and be sure that he is able to take care of you, more than your dad did. islam empowers women with honor and dignity. don’t settle for anything less.” - {nouman ali khan}

1:26 ;)
...and the biker abides, cos nothing less will do ;)

listen to ustadh nouman ali khan, if you are a believer, he will re-affirm your belief, if you are not, he will give you a perspective.

...per aspera ad astra :)

for abbu;
it happens pretty often…i dream…i see you…last night i dreamt that you are back...and when i woke up it took me good ten minutes to realise that it was just a dream, how stupid dreams can be……they ask me do i miss u, what should i tell them abbu, mostly i don’t cos a ‘yes’ wont suffice
let me tell you one thing abbu; you have left behind a  very contended wife who has no complaints whatsoever and can only reminiscence the good times you both shared and what a loving husband you have been to her and how every man falls short in comparison to you, even her sons and the son-in-law :)
you have left behind sons who can only thank you for everything you have been to them and are forever indebted for the sacrifice and the struggle you endured to get us all to where we are…they think about you as an entrepreneur with a conscience, their chest swells with pride when they describe you as a father who only ‘gave’ and never ever ‘took’
a daughter who has no words to describe what you are to her, missing your smile, your sense of humour, your kindness, your way of making everything better, mostly missing you…i hold on to the love not the loss…you are the most beautiful thing i hide inside me

i do wish you were here though, i would have loved it if you were here with ammi, but then i think about your days in the iccu and i realise between my happiness and your pain, i would rather let you go, its anyway no fun here abbu, things are complicated :(
i hope it is painless now, i hope it is better, i hope it is all what it was not here
'through hardships, to the stars'

i wish i had a way to show my gratitude

...the story of my life ;)

this morning at work:

(some random conversation about valentines)

me: ahh, its been ages since i got anything on valentines, not  even the spam email everyone else in the office received

boss's boss: what!!! your guy did'nt get you a card?

me: no :(

boss's boss: bastard! does'nt even know how to keep his girl happy, i got the missus a 20quid card from marks which she found on the table and was over the moon, thats a week of peace...easy peasy...your guy knows nothing!!!

me: he does, he does - he just sent me an sms
'i will surprise you today by introducing you to my girlfriend this valentines'

;)

(the biker just whatsapped me this pic, some screwed up love between nuts; i admit ;p)

so i live life, phir ek aur chai ki pyaali ka sahara, shukr Allah i don't smoke ;)

...nostalgia is'nt what it used to be!

someone: so what else
me: bas, work family movies book routine stuff
someone: so banker, earning big huh!
me: well not that big, but yeah the dope seems affordable
(this one guarantees a reaction from the crowd)
someone: hahahaha cool when you back
me: december
someone: nice, we shall then catch up, puraana addaa
me: sounds like a plan
someone: sounds like a date, so do you miss me?
me: no, we don't miss people, we remember them, the only one we miss is 'ourselves', what i used to be and how it used to be for me and how it never will be for me

few minutes, across continents

its just not the same

they dont get you anymore nor do you

told the biker that how sometimes we love people more in retrospect than in actual fact, cos we know so little of their present life and have no understanding of it ...you like them how they were not how they are...how we were...crazy these old forgotten feelings..i wasnt sure he was even listening to me or whether i was even audible to him, well i was cooking and he was reading, yeah thats 'quality time' in marriage ;)

but then he said, well distance and time do give nostalgia, but perspective and objectivity tag along too!

allah shukr; he gets me, totally

nostalgia is distraction for people who have no faith in the future

...lost in translation!

so who gets to decide what the global language should be, think about it, how easy it is for people who speak english as their native language to talk through a point in a formal set-up without compromising on the subtleties and the nuances which only when one has grown up with can express in and get away with it in a congregation where people from all backgrounds participate, so unfair!
i so embarrassingly realised how we as indians are so obsessed with  speaking in english when there is absolutely no need to, say (firsthand experience) with a waiter in a restaurant, cousins sitting amongst elders where not everyone can understand the language, salesgirl in a store, parents with their kids, cinema hall..almost everywhere! you will agree that we all come from such beautiful region (religion) each with it's very own rich language, why do we then not converse in the same or even in hindi (almost 33% of our population speaks hindi as per 2001 census), what is this vain fascination with english :(
i read that mulayam singh yadav proposed that mps in parliament speak in indian languages which i believe is a very prolific suggestion but the idea was met with lot of ridicule and mockery from all quarters...no one is disagreeing the fact that you need to use english as a principal medium of communication when having an international conversation, but what about at intra-national? so the point mulayam singh yadav puts forth makes absolute sense to me, unfortunately not to many! internaltionalism in noway means an end of individual nations!
english has surpassed just being a utilitarian tool for communication and enjoys a status of immense power today in india, what most of our anglophone fail to realise is that there is a sizeable proportion of our country who do have objection with the undue importance the language enjoys and it is this emotion that mulayam seeks to manifest, with you on this one sirji!
i live in a city where almost every borough has more than 100 languages spoken, such diversity, and trust me when i say that when two french meet not a single word of english flows, so do germans, the chinese and so on, and that makes me wonder why we don’t follow suit, most of the times i am in a situation where i insist on talking in urdu whereas the opposite person (who i am sure understands the language) speaks in english, i refuse to speak in english unless held under duress :) i am anyway not good with english, the country and the professional role i am in, i have to step out of my comfort zone and use the lingua franca, however at every opportunity i love to hear the sound of my language :)

so chances are high if you ask me 'how you doing' i would say 'sab badhiya, mata ki kripa hai, aap  batayen' (alhumdullilah, is more like it ;))

i can read and write urdu (shukriya ammi, she taught me urdu thinking how will i write letters to her when i move out to a faraway land also known as sasural, phew!!! well, for the records, i talk to her everyday and i also write her letters in urdu which i scan and email, isn’t that super cool!!!) cos i am proud about the fact it is my language, our language is a reflection of ourselves and if you tell me you can’t express yourself in that language, well then i am sorry for you for what you missing out on…i am sure i will never be able to write a book in urdu but yeah maybe i can pick one up and read, time to give the credit due :)
there is a reason why they call me old school ;)

...'mom'bay :)

if you happen to pass by bombay, kiss it for me - i owe it so much

gift from chotu (from his business trip to Hongkong), some taste ;)

...do not cross the yellow line!

i agree i have trust issues, i don’t buy it at the first go when people tell me that they love me, like me…or the sorts…i try to look for reason...'ulterior motives'...clearly i don’t trust anyone…the few i trust i fear for them the most…i was friends with death, i trusted death more than life, cos it was destined and it was fair…until i met death…and then it was mind-numbing…it was painful…it was is beyond repair and i fear death now…death of the people i trust…developmental psychology says trust and fear complement each other…i fear for the people i trust the most
i don’t trust anyone and gradually, for years, the feeling made me hate people when i didn’t want to hate...but i know these people love everything about me; except the things that count…and my most important is nothing to them, nothing...not even a sound they can recognise...and at the end of it all...they all whispered sorry and walk away, the way they love doing...absolutely unforgiving...did i ever tell you how the biker asked me out…'all i need is a fair chance’ is all he ever said (indeed a man of few words, phew!)
i don’t trust people with my feelings…with my vulnerabilities…so i prefer to fake a smile and lie rather then tell them how deeply they have hurt me everytime, every bloody time…but with the biker next to me i now don’t even feel like keeping up the pretence...i guess my tolerance threshold has hit a new low…i don’t give a shit nomore…i don’t wish to deal with your crap…i can’t take any…i don’t let people tell me what’s important, cos they are often talking about what's important to them, not me…i even make sure that you feel exactly the way i want you to feel  about you when dealing with me…but yet time and again i am told, i am a nice girl, no i am not, not to you, not to anyone, i am anything but nice…i am not nice enough to accommodate you in my life…not anymore...and just for the records i never found victimhood sexy
as murakami says, in norwegian woods:
"don’t feel sorry for yourself, only assholes do that"
i don’t know why i wrote what i wrote…or maybe i know…it’s a note to self…it’s a reminder to self…hoping it might give me more courage to be me and meet death head on…i know that’s getting too hopeful, but that’s cool, of all the things why should hope be weak, i know the pieces fit...i watched them fall away :)

"i began to draw an invisible boundary between myself and other people...no matter who i was dealing with...i maintained a set distance, carefully monitoring the person’s attitude so that they wouldn’t get any closer...i didn’t easily swallow what other people told me...my only passions were books and music."

...colour outside the lines ;)

it isn’t fair, at all, that there are no crash courses, no ‘how-tos’, no ’50 ways’ on growing up, no one ever told me it’s not only about being independent, paying your own bills, taking care of mortgages…but a whole lot of crap which i may not want to be party to…i realized that it’s also a place where people exchange expensive gifts, smile less, laugh lesser and that is if ever condescendingly, discuss art and philosophy, they curse/criticise bollywood, say no to metal(seriously!), people are no more fiery in their cynicism; the walk definitely does not measure up to the talk, are part of the ‘i do not do fb’ wannabe cool brigade (yeah but are very much on google+, goodreads, linkedin etc.), where fiction is no-no, the more obscure the author, the more factual the genre, the more like it, you no longer have any idea what’s cool, you stop trusting people, you are cynical about relationships, when there is no angst in you and nihilism appeals no more; infact you are too grown-up to be dramatic about anything, when confessing a guilt doesn’t make it any easier rather makes it more real…

you grow out of your heroes when you hit the ‘grown-up’ world

you no longer eat, play, love without an agenda or laugh, cry, jump in abandon or sing, dance, make a trip at whim
you cant even use the comic sans font (its only times or arial!!), bloody hell :)
you sideline aspirations for more practical things, like mortgages, or planning a baby or thinking about getting ‘settled’
we all are hiding behind this facade, pretending to be all grown-up…it’s terribly exhausting, this whole charade of grown-up-ness…protocol, etiquette, political correctness —think about it, if we all are conditioned to behave in a certain manner as per the text book definition won’t this render us as clones of each other…it’s a conspiracy, how can one express individuality through collective conformity
adding a little unnecessary rudeness and disrespect can take a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day on a totally different level, how intoxicating…maybe i don’t want to sit here with my four screen monitor with bloomberg terminal and look at these pricing charts and algorithms and talk to this ibank in a jargonful of fancy language…maybe i want to join a beneficiary or direct a kid's theatre or cook brazilian pastel or play on a broadway or design an outfit, maybe i want to become an inspiration, maybe i don’t want to colour inside the lines…
maybe..

growing up is so overrated :)
#guess its the growing amount of grey hair and slowing metabolism ;)
##adulthood, its exactly not that exciting place to be at, i remember admonishing chotu once ‘grow-up’ and he retorted back  “yaar growing up bahut boring kaam hai, tum karlo mere liye” :) isnt life's a lot more fun when you aren't responsible for your actions, i wish ;)

...'click'ed ;)

so the biker pretty often comes up with one or the other technological brainwave, sample this:

a random conversation ages ago:

biker: (totally frustrated) you know whats the worst part of photography?

me: (half interested) no

biker: transferring photos :(

me: hmmmm

biker: (suddenly all excited) what about auto-transfer through wifi with a touchscreen!

:)

and that ladies and gentlemen, is the story behind our new toy :)

*the biker's next demand is, wirelessly charging all gadgets (so as soon as you enter in a wifi zone, your iPhone, iPad, mac...should auto-detect-cum-charge itself)

...developers are you listening :)

...the disconnect :(

...and that ladies and gentlemen, is the problem!

...naah!

at my b-school reunion my handbag would read:

a. i know i am fat (don't be polite and say "you look different")
b. yes, i don't have kids yet

lets get talking now!

...fultoo filmy :)

client lunch meet:
setting – one of the poshest restaurant in the city
attendees - two british (vp), one swedish (legal counsel), one dutch (associate director), one italian (senior relationship manager) and one indian ;)
meeting agenda -  intense discussion on the regulation, mechanics and risk involved in issuing retail price index-linked bonds in the european  market
on knowing that i am an indian (don’t know what they thought i was before me telling them)
“oh, do you know about the actress from bollywood, who committed suicide, what happened, was she famous…..???”
…and the agenda deviates
phew!
sometimes i am amazed at the reach of bollywood...thanks, it keeps me grounded :)

...the truth about forever :(

“some people, they can’t just move on, you know, mourn and cry and be done with it...or at least seem to be, but for me…i don’t know; i didn’t want to fix it, to forget. it wasn’t something that was broken. it’s just…something that happened...and like that hole, i’m just finding ways, every day, of working around it. respecting and remembering and getting on at the same time”

miss you abbu
(nice to say it aloud sometimes)

...fear and hope :)

him: don’t you think it’s kind of selfish of us thinking of almighty only when we in trouble?
me: atleast it’s a start
him: its exploitation and its downright mean!
me: its faith
him: oh so very convenient
me: comforting instead, u need god to create a balance, a sanctity, a direction, a path, a reason, a conduit, you need a leader, a magician, a support, a confidant, a source of infinite anticipation.... something more than anyone individually or severally.
him: agreed, but its plain hypocrisy, you don’t play by the rules when the going is great,  but when you in need you pretend to be what you are intrinsically not, at the end of the day who you trying to fool!
me: you can’t blame people for changing for something good, something harmless, even though its temporary, i will give it to them – they will learn :)
i choose not to be a cynic tonight ;)
call out to Him with fear and hope (surat al-araaf 7:56)

...this man :)

19th april 2013

i have known the biker now for ten years and have been married for three. i smile when i think of him as my husband; well a life partner is more like it, and we both feel equally awkward when introducing each other to a third person, i don’t even complete my sentence and end up mumbling “hmmm, my…” ;) people often ask me what made me choose him, and i still don’t have an answer, but someone long back said to me “a conventional dulha won’t do for you” i agree!
i am very clear about who is ‘in’ and who is ‘out’ in my life (and one who is out, will never be allowed in, i don’t suffer fools), i don’t waste time on things/people who don’t match my mood, my tolerance level for a book is seven pages, for a movie or play say 11 minutes, for a human being, sixty seconds, for a job or relationship, three months, if it doesn’t work for me within this cut-off, i just let make it go…as bhai said to me couple of weeks before my nikah; “people like you can’t stay with an individual for too long” (talk about brotherly advice, phew!!!) but the biker stayed and how ;)
as against the general belief/rumour, i have never really known the biker before marriage nor was an affair going on, it just clicked when it had to, nothing dramatic…just, there exists someone behind perspectives...my guess would be, its god! before knowing him i knew lots of people from my city, my community, my clan, similar to me in many respects which the biker never was, is. it could have been simpler going down the known way, but life made me realise long back that it isn’t similarity that holds people together when bigger issues surface, only one thing does - compatibility
the biker and me are two very headstrong individuals with very resolute way of thinking and extreme opinions. we are very different from each other apparently; but if you categorically look through deep down we both are simple, honest, conservative, stubborn, blunt, non-ambitious, trust-worthy people – the ones who call a spade a spade with a capital S :) (now you can imagine what our arguments would be like) but the best part of being brutally honest is that you are ‘fair’ in your dealings – which we are (so more than arguments we have debates with proper reasoning!)
i was told i need a husband who can tame (domesticate!) me, seriously, am i that wild, if i ever was, never have i been so effectively put in my place all my life, good for my inflating ego too :)
‘marriage/husband/wife’ all these words appear too heavy for the easy-going relationship we share and the biker often says “lets annul our marriage and have a live-in” all my attempts at being a susheel patni goes down the drain when i am told not to use “aap”, “inhe/unhe” “leejiye/deejiye”, i never changed my surname (not that it proves anything, screw feminism) nor did the biker ever asked me to, i don’t remember ever having a conversation with the biker on the same, its plain convenience, when boarding a flight at times the crew calls him mr. khan :) he gives a damn, nor am i from the lot who suffer from existential anxiety and yet feel the compulsion to superimpose the guy’’s presence by adding the guys’s surname along with the maiden name (the malaika-arora-khan syndrome), how superficial is that! i am being told off if at times (by mistake) i wear bangles cos the biker has never seen me decked-up, i can only paint my nails black (which i love to anyway), he tells me outright if something is wrong with my cooking or if i am looking fat (which is always), treats me like one of his buddies, with backslapping, obscene jokes, loud guffawing et.al. (he calls me ‘bro’, i am not being funny, he seriously does!!!)…getting the drift…all i am trying to say, we don’t need to pretend to please anyone!
but at times we let one get over the other, so even if i don’t want to watch the whole 22 laps of motogp i will try to join him in the last one and cheer for his hero (rossi), i will let him have rossi’s wallpaper (though will make a big fuss how he never had mine), watch apple events religiously, i let him talk to his biking buddies about tyre pressure and power to weight ratio at 3.00 in the night (*sigh*), he joins me during my library visits and gives me company when i watch cheesy movies :) guess this is what marriage is made up of…well; i am no expert, i am just three years old into this gamble, but somehow i feel, we will sail through (inshaAllah), by now i know where we are heading but it seems a bit unreal at how easy it can be, the biker for sure will tell you a different story how “tough” it really is to put up with me :)
there was a time when discovering a new rock artist was bliss or doing a wheelie/stoppie was exhilarating, now even a discount on buying two cans of milk gives us a rush, yeah we used to be cool, then we got married :)
i don’t expect him to be my saviour-on-stand-by, though he is always there for me, i know i will pick and fight my own battles, but it is indeed reassuring to know that there is someone outside the ring who is watching over me :)
this ones for you biker, you bring out the magic in us, happy three, let the insanity never die :)
...despite everything
...despite it all
life is good… we must be doing something right :)

if u remember me, then i dont care if everyone else forgets :)

...me likes ;)

after a very long time, an album comes out which has more than one number loop-worthy and i have an inkling that this might just turn out to be an anthem for this generation akin to the way we (the 80s kids) grew up amidst pehla nasha and akele hum akele tum and aye mere humsafar :)

sunn raha hai na tu...

...beatles* you are right, yet again!

smartphones (iphone5, blackberry z10, samsung s4…) – 580 to 650quids
monthly data plan charges – 45quids

cost of developing an app - 200k to300k
being connected to cousins/family across the continent – priceless
there are somethings money can’t buy – attending a cousin's wedding real time being thousands of miles apart is one of them – for everything else, there’s abbu ;)
way to go sistah...
*money cant buy me love :)

...chasing mavericks!

"we all come from the sea, but we are not all of the sea,
those of us who are, we children of the tides, must return to it again and again,
until the day we don't come back leaving only that which was touched along the way..."

if a movie commences and climaxes with lines such as these, there is no way i am going to miss it, i am no cinema enthusiast to critique a movie…if a movie is capacitated to trigger an emotion the way a pursuit of happyness or a separation or kai po che does, its done its job and chasing mavericks is one such piece of art
it talks about a sport which i will never ever experience cos i just cant, the water.…it scares me
it is about a spirit which makes me believe, maybe, someday, i might ;)
the ones who push the limits, discover the limits sometimes push back ;)

...the self-preservation thing ;)

this thursday (21/3/2013) - 1.05 p.m. -  a colleague totally exasperated with me for putting down the offer to join the team at lunch (for the millionth time, yet again)

"damn...she is in her own little world"

"its cool, they know me there ;)"

sometimes i am the colour of air...sometimes it's only afterwards...i find that i'm not there ;)

...banker banter ;)

bankers are often accused of having a very dry sense of humour, generally what we find funny, normal people will not or they don’t get it…sample this;
;)
me: do you have a change for a quid please? the vending machine is acting crazy and is not accepting my one pound
colleague: here you go….couple of fifty pence
me: brilliant thank you
colleague: transfer fee?
:)
me (to a colleague who is working on the bloomberg terminal): hey, can you grab the libor for me please; need to get my swaps out
colleague: oh just assume it to be 0.57451287 or 0.48957326 whatever
me: huh?
colleague: well if barclays can, so can we
;)
me (thinking aloud): i think this deal is screwed, losses have increased by 100k q-o-q, what should i do?
colleague: your portfolio, your deal, your issue….your personal issue, go figure
me: oops i missed couple of zeroes there, it’s actually in billions
colleague: in that case it’s the nation’s issue, considering the geography of the deal, it will turn into an international issue
;)
colleague-t (a mother of a 3 year old) : you know the crèche where my kid is admitted to, well apart from the regular monthly charges we pay, incase we are late to pick up the boy by 5-10 minutes they charge us a fiver or a tenner…bloody morons
me: thinking about it, there is potential scope for securitising these cashflows
colleague-k: oh yes, as these are paid monthly and are regular cashflows
colleague-j: we can do a credit profiling of parents as the underlying asset
boss: default rate will be minimal; c’mon parents can’t default on child-minder’s cost after all we have the kid as the collateral *wicked smile*
team (except t): awesome idea khan, seize it, yayyyyyyy, ten-on-ten, terrific, patent it
me: and we issue another security say lcoks (late collection of kids security) where these charges of fiver and tenner can flow through, like mercs in rmbs deals
team (except t): whoa, bravo, you are star khan, excellent, genius, champ, bullseye *cheers* *hi-fives*
colleague-t: what the heck is wrong with you guys, these guys are not human anymore!!!
;)
as they say;
bankers dont die...they just lose interest ;)

...as simple :)

"most muslim women either live with their parents or their husbands"
-zero dark thirty (2013)

(such a comforting thought, being taken care of..i like it that way, Allah shukr :))

...turning thirty one ;)

well, without much ado (the way i love it) i turned thirty one...happen to sneakily check  chance upon the biker's phone to see if there is something special marked on for 26th of Jan *blush blush*

...and this is what i discovered:

...so on my bday, the dude is worried about his car tax *sniff sniff*

ever met a guy so practical...glad i did ;)

…a teacher at heart but a banker in mind :)

sometimes i envy people who can explain so very easily to others what they do…i mean their profile…say i am a teacher or a lawyer or say software engineer, pretty self-explanatory, aint it?
generally when someone asks me what i do, there is this slight recess (which only i am aware of) weighing; should i respond in all earnestness or should i not bother, ahh well mostly i don’t bother, the specifics don’t work for me…i tell them what i feel like at that moment, funny enough, many find this question as an opportunity to sell themselves, a chance at ostentation for many, for me, it is just a mood thing :)
“umm ‘’m into finance, banking” i would murmur - not quite sure if i should get into more details or just take a tangent from here with something completely off topic (which works like magic, mostly) say like a compliment “your gharara/jhumka is really nice” or “you looking pretty” well however, some persist, and then follows the most oft-repeated question (stemming from ignorance) “so which bank, hdfc, icici, kotak, indusind, sbi?” “do you do home loans/car loans”?
“hell no, i don’t work for a retail bank or do retail loans. well it’s an investment bank and we work for fiis, banks, institutional investors etc” i try to sound enthusiastic but end up sounding exasperated...i hate myself for making something i’m so passionate about sound so lame; just another number crunching excercise
“we help financial institution raise debt capital by structuring deals and simulating derivative pricing by taking into account risk as per basel iii norms” grand…now i sound like i have no idea what i do, except use long words to sound important -  how wannnabe!
"i look at complex spread-sheet, algorithms and formulae which aids in making financial decision to tighten spreads and take margin calls" - too pseudo.
"i look at the risk elements so the investor loses not a single penny"  -  aaaargh so limiting.
"my designation says that i am a quant analyst, the thing about my work is that it has no boundaries" - ugh very metaphysical
i am constantly in search for expressions which will encompass the enthusiasm and thrill i feel in my work. but in vain, can words ever make up for feelings? i struggle almost every time i’m asked this question not because i don’t know the answer but because i have yet to find the right words which do justice to what i actually do and doesn’t end up making me look like someone who is trying too hard to act important
“so what do you do?”
“jee i’ work at a library.”
“oh how nice beta. are you the manager there?”
“nope, i volunteer for kids activity”
“oh volunteering…”
*sigh*
'numbers' for people like us was never meant to be just a professional tool, it was meant to be a full-fledged way of life and as we graduated from b-schools majoring in finance, those millions of 7 years ago, i don’t think i recognized that i was afflicted because it didn’t show back then, so naïve; but now it’s screaming obvious…here’s a look at the symptoms - after having agreed to “contracted hours” after the preliminary investor meet, i  build up models, liaise with counterparts, draw deadlines for myself and my client, suddenly i find myself working way way overtime, not only in  terms of actual hours and minutes, but in my head too. it’s no longer just another deal but a part of my being...it’s like a disease, a contagion, where me and my work are embodied in each other…so when i am sleeping, having my shower, walking on my way back home, doing groceries, cooking…i am calculating, yes i am!!! mental mathematics, yes its driving me mental :) the work cannot be separated from me because the invisible dividing line where the work ends and i begin is very vague, very very vague…there are these maths quizzes in office daily held by the VP of the bank, you sure know by now who wins it everyday :)

i am not saying that i am workaholic, i love my stretch of velaapanti as much as anyone out there...but most of the times me and my work get so captivated into each other that even if i want to stop, i cant; because the momentum that has built up is too addictive, too overwhelmingly out of control and its  simply impossible to pull brakes, i love it, to truly understand the mania try to atleast work in these financial hubs (for a year or two) - mumbai, london, frankfurt, new york and hongkong, once in a lifetime, i have checkmarked three there, two to go :)
the biker said something that got me thinking about when does it really ends, when as bankers, we take on projects after projects or when, as drained bankers do we just do ctrl c ctrl v? when i start calling a deal as an investment option? when the cash modelling is done? or when the pitch report is ready ? or when the cash is actually tinkling in the investors account? do our roles ever really has a closure? or does it not? at a very certain level it is not only about a deal but the whole portfolio affecting a nation’s economic policies, where it’s not only changing someone’s balance sheet but many lives as well :)

(the subprime-crisis and consequent recession across the globe was just one of the many life changers)
exhausting innit?
“so what do you do?”
“jee i’ work as a flower arranger in a flower shop.”
“do they pay you enough?”
*double sigh*
it’s only when i’m in the midst of the action, holding an argument in the boardroom to prove a point, enjoying a discussion with the best brains in the industry, when the numbers talk to me, i truly enjoy, all the ummmm ‘ hmmmmm' ahhhhhhhhhhh disappear, replaced with the staunch belief in what i do and i realize that there’s nothing else i would rather be doing in my life than play with numbers :)
and when i get bored of numbers (not really, it’s the corporate shebang) i go back to teaching, simply to loosen up, to renew my license to recklessness…the world of official insanity :)

if you cant do it passionately, joyously, even madly, then please dont do it, just because its a job it doesnt mean it should suck!

...tohfa (3) laya (3) :)

i have been bugging the biker for quite a while moaning about how he has never gifted me any of those - soft toy / chocolate / cards  - the whole cheesy shenanigan, you know, usually the guys&girls into... well, knowing me, he never risked it and knowing him; i am sure he wont.cant. :)

so i dragged him to a toy store yesterday and made him buy this for myself (c'mon at times even i wish to be treated the girly way :))

;)

as the biker summed up "tum dono ki shaqlein bahut milti hain"  :(

phew...

the day ended with ghulam ali's chupke chupke raat din aansu bahaana yaad hai
:( *sniff sniff* :(

so much for - maang ke dekh lo mujhse chand, sunona sunona sunn lonaaaa :)

the guy doesnt do flowers, diamonds, poems - but what he does for his mad girl, i dont know any other guy will :)

...from 'S' to 'XL' :)

the journey
most 'delectably' pleasurable

the realisation
most 'derisively' painful

what next
चक दे फट्टे, मट्टी ड़ाले :)

...my moments, living it up :)

so when i told the biker “this trip i want to spend quality time with ammi, so no intrusions”,  he appeared a tad bit disappointed, but he knows that political correctness was never my forte, he agreed, i conspired :)
`the build-up, the surprise, the shock, the 2.00 a.m. knock
`chotu smiling everytime i sang “dhundu mai dhundu mere brother ki dulhan”
`nothing like ghar ka khana and nothing ever like ammi ke haath ka khana
`still fitting in to your old pjs and bade bhaiyya very confidently stealing away your very old very oversized very holey very  comfy tee
`chotu sabotaging my drawers/my shelves/ my space which very explicitly warns ‘no admission without permission’ so very audaciously
`ammi still holding on to my old fav kurtas (in which i can just not fit in anymore)
`cleaning the very dear bookshelf which i have built on over the years and sitting amongst murakami, chekhov, dylan, marx, dostoevsky :)
`buying a pirated dvd after much bargaining (clad in complete hijab – luccha maulana syndrome, yeah i know) and watching a full on bollywood flick with bade bhaiyya and chotu (we all love sallu bhai)
`sleeping beyond wake-up hours and defying the very concept of time, no alarms, no snoozes, no conf calls, no presentation, no deliverables, no algorithms, no early morning tube, no excel s/s, no investor meets

`as per the deal with the biker, a getaway from everyone at panchgani for a week - the misal, the poha, the sabudana khichdi - the chicken tandoori, jaffer bhai's biryani, the manchurian with naan and crime patrol - the plan to escape to goa :)

`relatives so nosy; yet so indispensably lovely :)

`language you have grown up with, can relate to and recognize with constantly in the background - simply ethereal

`the chicken thai curry for the in-laws (appreciation galore, shusheel bahu after all *acting coy and doing the dupatta thingy* ;)) and paneer kadhai/paneer-alu-matar for bros (and chotu commenting on the parboiled potatoes "aalu bhaag raha hai" - criticising bros, after all *blowing punches his way* :) )

`the man in store just round the corner smiling over, the kind of warm and sincere ones you saw in clark gable classics
`dark and dusty lanes which the biker can ride through with his eyes closed, a city we know more by the night and identify with through the day
`people asking unapologetically with the childish grin on “koi good news” “koi khush khabari”  as if they are entitled to know so (i don’t know when  they included this ‘piece of information’ in the rti act :) ), without a slightest sense of trespassing someone’s’ privacy. most of the times these are nice people, at the most i can call them silly, simply products of our society with all its intrinsic individual quirks
`the little girl in neighbourhood asking me “aap kahaan gayab the didi”, i like her, her name is fruity and cos of that i like her even more
`the cousin trying to calculate the exchange rate differences and missing out on the number of zeroes
`those afternoon siestas with ammi under the favourite razaai, feeling the breathe, the momentum and the rhythm; so unlike from the one i dwelled in, a world away from people with an agenda, the business mindedness, the selfish gene, the crafty ways, i reach out and feel the closeness and confess ‘yeah, this is mine!’

wish i could capture these moments on my camera (just for myself and not for some fb/whatsapp/bbm display, just mine, yeah i am selfish that way)
`the worn-out wooden tasbih, the housekeys corner, the known smells, the garam masala cabinet, the extra push to open the door, those late night mehfil, the cry for ‘meetha’ after dinner, the comfort of shalwar-kameez, the janamaaz on chowki, the south indian aunty asking “kabhi aaya, kabhi jaayega, mister kahan hai” in one  breath, the ‘ting’ of the elevator that heralds the entry and the doorbell that seals it, bade bhaiyya ensuring the fruit rack is always full with kacche amrud, ammi cooking damaadji’s fav dish every single night, the self-invited damaadji at every single dinner (biker, we have never met a damaad so unpretentious, we like you, i do), filtering through the numerous rishtas for chotu (he is a dude mashaAllah), chotu saying “hum apna motor khud laayenge”, badiammi’s achaar, khaala’s daawat, chai mai dooba ke biscuit, paaya at breakfast (courtesy b&b at panchgani), the ten rupee coin...
...and the rains
all this and more gave an expression to my ‘happiness for the known’
they said happiness is actually a sequence of shots and not just one big grand climax, i didn’t get it then

i get it now

so despite all logic, all practicalities, all evidence, all sensibilities, all rationalism, a small tear very fearlessly trickles down the cheek every time i reach the ‘departure’ terminal

when all that you wanted
and all that you had
don't seem so much
for you to hold on to
for you to belong to
there is always something to go back to and i confess that i will always be me and it will always be bombay :)

***utterly disappointed with a friend’s father commenting blatantly “india is going nowhere and there is no future here for kids like you” wondering how can one simply give up on a whole country, a whole freaking country and an elderly gentleman at that...the evergrowing perception that getting out is the only way forward is utterly false, how far can one really run from home :(
